Sashiko is a type of hand stitching that originated in Japan. Used for  mending and embellishment, it has a rich history of tradition and  design. Today many people are discovering it as part of the visible mending movement. Come and learn the basics of stitching, pattern  transfer, tools and techniques. We will be making several small  pieces suitable to be made into coasters, pin cushions or used as a  patch on clothing. Materials will be provided and will be yours to take home at the end of class.

Drop spindles require very little space to work  with and can be spun on virtually anywhere! This workshop is designed to  teach you how to spin on a drop spindle,  while also familiarizing you with the purpose of various types of spindles. Students will have the opportunity to try several spindles and will leave with a basic working knowledge of how they spin. All materials provided.

Come and explore new ways to add surface design elements to your fabric creations! This is a two day class: The first day will focus on block printing fabric and the second on embellishing your designs with embroidery. You will make a piece suitable for displaying by itself or using for a pillow or small bag. All materials will be provided but please feel free to bring your own fabric or embellishing threads.

This is not your typical tie-dyeing class! Students will learn the shibori pole wrapping technique known as Arashi, the Japanese term for “storm,” to create diagonal stripe designs reminiscent of storm-driven rain or water ripple patterns on a windowpane. Students will have the opportunity to dye two silk scarves with additional scarves available for purchase. Students can bring their own small pieces of fabric to dye. All dyeing materials will be provided.

While the world offers a wide variety of choices in quilting fabric colors and patterns, there are times when you crave a more personal expression. You want to experiment with dyeing a unique color but don’t know where to start, without risking using a large quantity of materials and wasting time and materials. In this class, you will learn to create a personal palette of colors perfect for experimenting with quilting a mini quilt pattern, simple English Paper Piecing, or small, useful item. The fabrics produced will be wash-fast, color-fast, and perfect for creating heirloom quality projects.
