Steamroller Printmaking Day At KIA

STEAMROLLER PRINTMAKING DAY AT KIA

On Saturday, Sept 28, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts will host its first-ever community printmaking day in which a large asphalt roller is used as a printing press to produce vibrant, large-scale prints from relief carvings. Participants in the event will have the opportunity to make prints that are 3 feet wide and up to 6 feet long from plywood blocks that must be carved in advance. In order to support this exciting experience, the Kirk Newman Art School is offering a class this summer to guide students through the process of carving blocks. Those who sign-up for the summer prep class will also receive a preferred printmaking spot on Sept 28. Community printmakers will also be invited to participate in the event with sign-ups available early in the summer. Spaces to participate in the event are limited, so potential printmakers may want to make plans early and consider whether to take the class, carve your block independently, or collaborate with other printmakers. Print blocks must be 3 feet wide and can range from 2 to 6 feet long. More details will be posted on the KIA website in late May. The event will be held in KIA’s parking lot off of South Street.

STEAMROLLER PRINTMAKING PREP CLASS

Do you want to participate in September’s Steamroller day, but don’t know where to start? In this class, several printmaking instructors will give you help and ideas for supplies, imagery, and carving. You will also get studio time to work on your block. Supplies will be available for purchase, or you can bring your own. The class tuition covers matrix, some tools, storage, and other materials. Tuition is a per person rate, even if you chose to do a collaborative matrix.
