Dell Darnell (they/them) is the founder of The Dapper Hammer and is a carpenter and woodworking educator. Darnell started The Dapper Hammer, Michigan’s first trans-owned teaching workshop, several years ago to chase a dream of supporting the community with their hands, building beautiful things, and sharing their passion of teaching people who are not traditionally represented in the trades - including girls, youth, women, trans, and non-binary folks. Darnell loves the energy and empowerment that comes from a space designed for inclusivity and diversity – especially when it’s a niche that has historically been exclusive of so many.

When they are not swinging a hammer, Darnell is the Director of Services for OutFront Kalamazoo and oversees all DEI training, two housing programs, and all mental, physical, and social health services. Darnell holds a master’s degree in International Non-Profit Administration from Western Michigan University and has been the recipient of several awards for their work advancing the movement for justice and equality for the LGBTQ+ community.
