Join us for a screening of the film Black Ash Basketry: A Story of Cultural Resistance. A collaborative project of the Great Lakes Lifeways Institute, Grand Rapids Community College, and the Goodwillie Environmental School, this film explores the role that black ash basketry has played in Anishinaabe culture for generations. The film follows basketmaker Steve Pigeon and his extended family, highlighting the ways in which basketry has served as a powerful connecting force between generations. Black Ash Basketry has a run time of 60 minutes.

While you’re here, don’t miss Kelly Church’s black ash piece Every Dawn is a New Day, a new work recently acquired by the KIA and on view in the Legendary Voices exhibition.
